Teachers INSET Joking Aside; humour and learning

This session is designed to explore how you can incorporate comedy into your teaching practice. Investigate how comedy can encourage students to develop a wide range of personal and interpersonal skills, as well as creativity, performance, writing, thinking and problem solving skills. The interactive session covers topics including; comedy and classroom management, comedy as a creative resource and comedy as a confidence booster.

Can't tell a joke to save your life? don't worry! this session is about using comedy as a teaching resource not about you being the class clown!

There was definitely more laughter in the classroom, They were learning almost without noticing. And it made it more fun for me too!'' Richard Doyle, Science teacher, Alsop High School

Research tells us that used appropriately humour can be a useful technique to use in the classroom. A common misconception is that using humour and encouraging laughter means that young people are not engaged and are not learning.

However…

Laughter increases the amount of adrenaline in our bodies, increases oxygen flow and pulse rate. After these heightened responses, the body is more relaxed and therefore educators can use this calm feeling to promote sociability and better learning with young people.

The Comedy Trust provide comedy workshops for all teaching staff either as part of an INSET training day or for any other staff training or team building day.

Workshops can be tailored to suit the groups needs and can include, stand up comedy, laughter therapy and the use of humour in the classroom. Workshops can last from 1-hour to a full day and can be on site or based at Royal Court Theatre, Liverpool City Centre.
