School Objectives
To improve the self-esteem and confidence levels of a group of disengaged pupils through comedy based workshops and to use this programme to help them achieve their Silver Arts Award.
Workshops
Tutors used a variety of different techniques to stimulate involvement with the group. Audio, visual and kinesthetic activities were employed to ensure that engagement was retained. Pupils took part in improvisation games, generated comedy grams to develop ideas for a comedy story and worked together to come up with a format for their final performance.
Outcomes
The named teacher observed an increase in confidence, self-esteem,
communication skills and creativity in all group members. The group performed a comedy variety show in front of families and teachers at the end, and worked together as a team which the teachers commented would not have been possible beforehand.
The group also raised money for Breast Cancer by donating ticket revenue.
"Watching the growth and development of the students over the weekswas a joy. One student did not want to take part in the programme atfirst but gradually during the 6 weeks he has smiled, joined in somegames and been involved in the performance. He was able to be part ofa team and feel as though his contribution was important."
