Oakmere College

Objectives

To provide transferrable skills for disadvantaged young people involved in vocational training.

Workshops

Previously students were lacking in confidence and struggled to express themselves clearly. The workshops were designed to build their confidence and assist them to voice their opinions and comments constructively. Young people were supported by comedians to write and deliver their own original piece of stand up comedy. Students were encouraged to reflect critically on their own development each week and were supported to take part in constructive peer reviews to help develop their communication skills.

Outcomes

The students performed a short piece of improvised comedy in front of a select audience, and all commented that they had enjoyed the experience, could use the skills in other areas of their training and overall felt more confident in their abilities.

"One particular participant had extreme difficulty interacting in groups as well as talking to new people. Over the weeks the participant integrated within the group, developing into a strong / key group member. The student has now offered to perfrom a solo stand up routine for the college Open Day!"
