Sandfield Park School

Aim

To encourage young people to develop their creative and communication skills. The project was funded by LEC Enrichment.

Objectives

  • * By engaging the young people in stand up comedy techniques to boost their confidence and self-esteem, communication and presentation skills.
  • * By using comedy as a vehicle to improve the young people’s speaking and listening skills.
  • * Encourage creativity amongst the group through the generation of comic material and delivery.

Workshops

Each week the group of 15 students worked with creative practitioner Elaine Owen at their school. The young people were encouraged to discuss the things that made them laugh and why. Workshops were focussed around character creation, accents and facial expressions which was challenging but fun for the young people.

Outcomes

At the end of the 5 weeks the pupils performed a short 5 minute ensemble piece for some teachers and school staff, showcasing the skills they had learnt throughout the programme. The young people benefited from increased confidence from the activities used during the sessions, and also improved communication skills.

The young people were keen for the tutor to return to their school again.
