"The communication and public speaking skills that this group of young people have learned as part of this course would seem to be well suited for the kind of world that they will eventually seek to find work in." External Evaluation Advisor for Merseyside ACME
The following profiles illustrate some of the key impacts Stand Out has had on young people. These impacts were recorded from feedback given by teachers, parents, young people and tutors from the Stand Out programme.
Impacts of Stand Out course on young people
* A Year 9 pupil who had poor reading and writing skills but was able to produce some very well thought out comedy material using word-play and techniques used by comedians such as 'call back' in a very advanced way. After the course the student commented on how they felt more confident applying these skills in the classroom.
* A year 9 pupil who was on the SEN register and struggled to fit into social groups within the school is now integrating more with other young people and is showing signs of increased confidence. Teachers from the school have told us that other young people have a new found respect for the student as a result of the talent they displayed during the end of course performance.
* A year 10 pupil who experienced a severe lack of confidence experienced a
significant increase in self-esteem and confidence after taking part in the programme. After spending time with our tutors in a one on one situation for a part of each session their confidence began to grow. They were supported by other group members throughout the course and even though they were very nervous managed to perform a short stand up routine of material they had written themselves.Teachers from her school have told us that Stand Our gave this pupil confidence they didn’t have before and they are now going to choose drama as an option.
* A year 10 student who was facing exclusion from school was able to find an outlet for their creativity. Taking part in the course allowed them to develop skills in an alternative learning environment. Both the students teachers and parents commented on how they had enjoyed seeing them excel at something they were so engaged in. The teachers have expressed their hope for using this as a platform to build stronger relationships with this student in school.
